Glossary of Fused Quartz Terms and Definitions
Angles
A milled bevel accomplished through machining or in the overall design profile. We utilize CNC milling centers and CADCAM Water Jet milling centers.
Bevels
An angle can be a bevel (such as a chamfer, a safety feature added so material cannot cut the user) or a bevel can be machined according to a drawing – removing burrs or sharp angles.

Borosilicate
Also known as Pyrex. For industrial use.
CADCAM Water Milling
(Computer automated drawing/machining) Water Milling /
Water Jetting – computer controlled drawings used for machining.
Chamfers
A break edge – safety edge to remove sharpness.

CNC
Computer Numerical Control. Parameters used in computer programming, to produce a precise machined result.
Edges
How the edge finish is described. Finish can be accomplished through CNC, Water Jet, Blanchard, OD (outer diameter).
Fine Blanchard
Finish completed with 240 grit diamond. Milling marks will be evident.
Fine Lapped (no milling marks)
Completed with Aluminum Oxide Grit for a smoother finish.
Flatness
Controlling the level across the piece. Completed in wavelengths and TIR depending on the surface finish. Generally, we try to hold to .001 flatness every 5-6 inches.
Furnace Blue Glass
Observation blue borosilicate base tinted glass used to look directly at flame. Known as filter glass used to get a clear view of flame.
Fused Quartz
Semiconductor grade, with 99.995 purity.
Fused Quartz Discs
Range in diameter from 0.25″ to 24″
Fused Quartz Machining
Between CNC Water Jet and Cylindrical Grinding.
Fused Quartz Plates
Size based on finish, in all finishes
Fused Quartz Windows
Polished discs.
Fused Silica
Exists in 60 different grades. A man made material that is chemically made, whereas fused quartz is natural. Popular use is in the optics field.
Industrial Glass
As the term says, glass for industrial applications and R&D Research and Development of materials processed.
Opaque Quartz
White quartz used as a heat block, will not allow heat or light transmission.
O Ring Grooves
A machining application we (MGS Machined Glass Specialists) can match.
Quartz
Mined silica sand material controlled for semiconductor applications
Sand blasted
Creating an opaque surface on a piece of material. Typically accomplished with a heavy grind, grit blast
Semiconductor-grade Quartz
Standard grade of quartz known for purity.
Site Ports
Made to withstand high pressure and high temperature. Other term for window, to see inside an enclosure to what is being manufactured. Often used in the petroleum industry.

Slots
A milling application.
Standard Diamond Finish
240 grit diamond – used on Fine Blanchard.
Step Ledges
Milling application that as the name implies, looks like a step.

Surface Finish
All the different types of finishes done to user specifications. Such as Ground and Polished, Blanchard Ground, Fine Lapped Ground, Fine Blanchard, Fine Lapped (No Milling Marks), Sand Blasted.
Wavelengths
Calling out flatness of polished surfaces. Our standard is within 2-4 waves per inch.
Fused Quartz Windows
All of our fused quartz widows, also known as fused quartz sight ports are created to customer specifications.
Fused Quartz Discs
All fused quartz discs are shaped to your project specifications. Adding holes, flats, bevels, slots or any other features will be accomplished to your satisfaction.
Fused Quartz Plates
Fused quartz plates may be customized with holes, slots, angles and many other machining techniques.
